Neighbor farms a lot of acres, and has a pretty decent full time crew. He buys yearlings about the time harvest is over and the machinery is put away, feeds them in a lot, and sells them before the busy season starts again.
Says he doesn't make a whole lot of profit on it, but he does come out ahead, and keeps the guys employed, and everyone's freezers full. Gives a butcher steer to every hired man every year. I think he barely broke even the first year or two, but that was because he had to (re) build pens, and buy some equipment. Now that that is mostly done, I think he's doing all right.
