Maybe a shot in the dark assumption/guess.
For old people, it would be a pretty good guess. Or if wrong a reason to start the conversation they wanted to start anyway.
It doesn't have to make sense if it is a scam. Just a way to get a foot in the door so to speak. Get a conversation started to carry the scam to the next level.
