I have two printers.  One is a 15 year old color HP LaserJet that won't die and a 5-7 year old Brother black and white printer/scanner/fax that has never let me down.  I'm not going to tell you to stay away from HP but if you go that route go with the higher end products.  The nice thing about the Brother machines is their software is lightweight no frills.
