Pittsburg, Kansas | Where we stay in the winter we have a couple from Copenhagen that comes for a month. We sometimes have meals together and sometimes we will prepare something they are not used to.
So one meal they treated us to a traditional, I will call it rotten they called it fermented, fish. They brought in a can from Denmark. About 8 people participated.
They were very specific in how we ate it. We took each bite all at once as a group with some Denmarkian saying or salute. Very small bite of fish with an Anchovy fish on top of the bite, consumed, then quickly followed by an already prepared shot of peppermint schnapps sitting beside your plate. The schnapps was not optional. It was necessary. The whole shot, no sipping.
It was a very small portion fortunately, but after several bites and the follow up, everyone was starting to feel fine.
We have not since repeated that meal.
It WAS a memorable night!
