The BMS score goes up to 12, with the top end being so highly marbled that it appears white in color.
Wagyu semen is used for AI at many dairy operations. The calves are usually smaller, so dairies often use Wagyu with first calf heifers.
We have worked with dairies for on both AI and embryo transfer programs. The idea is that it would allow for a constant supply of calves for slaughter year around, and our restaurant customers don't want frozen product.
Unfortunately, the BMS grades we've found with F1 dairy/Wagyu calves has not been consistently high enough for us, so we are not doing AI at dairies any more. We are working with higher percentage Wagyu now, which results in the high BMS scores that we are striving for. There are challenges to it though, in that the higher the percentage Wagyu, the slower they are usually to attain slaughter weight.
Doing embryo transfers is a way to ramp up a herd of high percentage Wagyu, but it is expensive.
