Same here. I've made plenty of my own harnesses from 16 gauge automotive wires, Deutsch DT and Amp plugs for 20/20 and they have all worked fine.
Just make sure it's multi stranded automotive wire with PVC coating. A single stranded wire will get brittle and break as it swings around on top of your cab.
