Subject: Pre harvest selling vs post harvest selling

Claremont,MN

In a average year, what is the price advantage or disadvantage to pre harvest selling vs post harvest selling?  I am mainly thinking corn or soybeans. If you usually sell lets say December- July and usually deliver in that same time frame.   For example if I thought that in a given year January 15th was a day that I thought the price was right to sell and I wanted to deliver in the June timeframe, I could sell old crop for the same years June delivery (sell in 2024 to deliver in 2024) or I could sell new crop for the following year delivery (sell in 2024 to deliver in 2025).  Is there a price advantage to be pre or post selling or does it go in cycles like the rest of the market and as long as you stick to doing it the same way instead of chasing things it will come out even in the end?
