southern MN
I always talk about my clay soils, but the really sealed up stuff is the deeper bluish clays, maybe 4+ feet on average.

The shallower subsoil is a yellow clay that the glaciers mixed up enough with the old topsoil that it does drain to tile. Was common to be on 80 foot centers here. I think 60 is much more common on new work now. With a bit of every spacing here and there of course. What I have had done of late is 80 foot centers. I only have a 2 acre patch that I can see water surface between the runs in a real heavy rain period. It is a natural spring deal on a sidehill, there is a gravel patch above it, pretty clear the several acres of gravely ground drains and funnels to that sidehill spot.

We try to get tile 3 feet deep, lot of ridges and such we have to travel through deeper to connect the prairie potholes, sure don’t like to be less than 24 inches of dirt over the top. And I too have some old stuff that is only 15-18 inches of dirt over the top in short runs.

Nice stuff, thanks for sharing.
