North Central MN | There's a whole bunch of factors that influence bagged seed for sale. The biggest one I've seen reduce supply is the usage of new inbreds that breeders are really high on but have low seed yields. That coupled with any adverse weather problems leads to less supply and also affects the seed quality. Its usually very specific hybrids and their "cousins" that have availability issues.
The "plant health" initiative by many breeders is bringing in foreign germplasm, many are from costal Europe, that dont produce seed well in the main production areas of the US. Yield like crazy but struggle to produce large amounts of viable seed. Take that same inbred and cross it with others that a seed company is high on and you create a shortage.
Forecasts for the seed you plant this spring were made in the fall of 2023. Most of the hybrids that are short in my area are CRW traited or new products with high stay-green ratings. | |
