I started out with plans to just leave it as a cover crop and terminate it before planting. Pretty low expectations
Dry early spring makes me wonder if we won’t have a dry summer and extra hay would be nice. It was spinner spread last fall with fertilizer. Hoping just for some erosion control and root action to break compaction. Looks great from the road but thin spots when you walk it. Didn’t know if it would spread out more if I don’t terminate
I'm gonna guess 50% of the tonnage of a thick drilled stand. If summer is dry, letting the rye grow longer is going to hurt soybean yield. If you're in insurance claim territory anyhow it doesn't matter, but not gonna be great if you just shave 10 bushels off and don't otherwise trigger a claim.
