There is a Stinger herbicide that can be used to spot spray. Not perfect but it does help without being terribly destructive. The 3 worst problems establishing prairie are thistles, thistles and thistles. If you have 8 thistles, you can tell someone to pull them on the right moon sign, but not 8 acres.
Pheasants Forever had some subsidized seed mixes. There are better choices.
