The Panama Canal is a interesting place and should be a bucket list item. I went in mid 2000s or so, not on a cruise so I did not go through the locks. I went fishing between the locks in the lakes from Miraflores over to Gatun. It was amazing how close to the big ships you could get. Deep sea fishing around the Pearl Islands was fun. We ate on top of the Miraflores locks at the restaurant watching the ships go through while the locks were in action. It is an amazing feat similar to the Hoover dam. A good book to read before your trip is “Panama Fever” by Matthew Parker. It can be very hot and humid in summer months. Late winter or early spring best time to visit.
