Eastern NE KS | I'm not sure Android or Apple does this but I'd think it would still be in play to make updates quicker.
Back when I developed a PC app (circa 1991-7), we had a tool that compared each byte of the old version to the new. The tool recorded each change. Then added a 'wrapper' that applied the changes to a customers old version.
End result: the updated executable was exactly the same size as a clean install of the new version. We used this tool because our distribution method was 1.4 MB disks and USPS. Full install required 3-4 disks. Many updates required just one disk.
