A solar eclipse happens when the moon passes between your vantage point and the sun. That's why it isn't an eclipse everywhere. This isn't the earth rotating differently to make night.
It it is the opposite of a lunar eclipse which happens on Monday. Where the earth passes between the sun and the moon.
