Subject: RE: Changing DIRT to SOIL

southern MN
I have some bigger patches of field that needed tile, and 60 years of tillage, to bring the organic matter down to 7%, and the ph to under 8.

Dad never put manure there, it was always need more other places.

I did rotate a cover crop there one year, but again would rather hit other places, I sure don’t want to build that organic matter up to 9 and over again! Cover crops are a difficult thing in a really cold short season area, often they show negative returns unless you can be creative on a few of your acres.

It’s pretty good soil now. Without covers or poop. It’s the ground that will make 100bu corn in a one in a hundred year drought….

I sure get your message, and agree with you 90% of the time. It’s just a big world, there are lots of situations out there that need different solutions.

The original message was intended to rile up a reply by insinuating we are dummies for not doing it his way. And I understand that, it’s cool.
