Boone Co. Iowa
The game has changed. Auto-steer and lights and crop insurance has changed how much a farmer can farm. Ethanol and biodiesel and renewable diesel has changed the demand side of row-cropping. Hog and chicken buildings have changed the NEED and value of farmland. Whole-field tiling has made marginal farm ground much more consistent and productive - that increases yields and crop insurance guarantees. Big farmers have the ability to price corn and beans and fertilizer at rates that a small guy like me ( I could supply local ethanol plant enough corn to operate one short day) can only dream of. I doubt my one combine purchase every 8-9 years gets me the same discount of the guy who trades 2 every year.

In general growth and ownership is more valuable than roi.

Most of the changes I mentioned started 20 years ago. If you took a chance on 1 or more of all of those things years ago, you are seeing huge payoffs today.
