For me I'm planting beans on 22" and corn on 30"
22" planters were dirt cheap in '18 and I like to get canopy, although it really doesn't seem to matter much.
Used to use a drill but the singulation was non existent, along with poor depth control, not to mention hairpinning in the wet spots.
Drop 112-120K depending on speed and Its still too thick of a stand IMO.
Even a poorly maintained planter will do a better job than a perfectly set drill IMO.
