I've never tried it, but I've seen a bunch of videos about bike "crit" racing (a bunch of bikes doing laps of a short road course). One piece of advice I've heard is "race the best bike that you can afford to crash on Sunday and replace on Monday." I'm not racing my car, but I feel like it's worth applying a similar philosophy. I paid $1500 for my current car.
