Here are some Cliff notes copied from the interweb.
The number of containers that can be stacked in one hold of an ocean-going cargo ship can vary widely depending on the size of the ship and the size of the containers. However, as a general rule of thumb, a modern container ship can typically carry between 14,000 to 21,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in its holds.
TEU is a standard unit used in the shipping industry to measure the volume of a container. A 20-foot container is equal to one TEU, and a 40-foot container is equal to two TEUs.
