It drives me nuts to see the steering wheel spinning while Tesla cars are letting the computer drive. Would not be necessary with a steer by wire system.



I think at this point it is because Tesla's system still requires human assistance. It isn't quite to the point yet where the computer can be 100% trusted. By having the steering wheel turn as the computer navigates, you as a human can see what is going on so you can better know when/if to take control. Maybe once the computer is able to navigate 100% safely, they will disable the wheel. I have read several things that say cars of the future will likely have no controls at all.
