Personally, I prefer storing data in CSV. To me, SHP format is a mess. Yes, it works. But I find myself doing more and more outside SMS and prefer dealing with tabular data.
Can you export to CSV? You could open it in Excel and see what attributes made it out. You can do some math on the data in Excel, save it, and read it into SMS.
