I would just add on a room made of reinforced cast in place concrete (walls as well as ceiling), and finish it on the inside and out to match your house. You then have a useable room thar serves as a shelter.
As long as you have a rugged enough door, I don't think debris would penetrate eight inches of reinforced concrete
