NS Canada | Yes, run into one now and then. The cow keeps her condition, appears to have a bag and nurse the calf normally, but yet raises a dink. I've even tried giving one a few years to see if it was perhaps just a sick calf one year that I missed the sickness and it had lingering effects, but nope Just raising poor calves.
This is where weighing calves can pin point trends. I won't keep a cow now that can't raise a calf @ 2.5 lb/day after her 1st or 2nd calf.
edit, Here's a screen shot from my spreadsheet . You can watch trends as the cows mature and fall off towards their older years too, or have an anomoly. I'm working at getting them more consistent, but it's a tough metric to get them all lined up on, with young and old cattle as the outliers. Take this 2.37 for example, thats an old cow that has dropped out of production, seen yr over yr. 2023 weights were wonky as well because of our weather, so some lenience was given.
