Instead of the "socialist" govt you had under Roosevelt, we had a Conservative Govt in Canada that held onto the Hoover template until 1934. We had internment camps and the Mounties were used to control uprisings (See Regina Riot).

In his last year of power, R.B. Bennett, who was not an evil man despite his blindered world view, eventually adopted the New Deal for Canada.

The Bank of Canada, The PFRA(our soil conservation service which has just been dissolved), The CBC on which Ernie gets his left wing ideas, the old age pension--all were honest attempts to put things right after four long years of being told by the bankers that all we had to do was weed out the weak and unfit! All were brought in by a profoundly conservative govt that had seen that things were not "going to get back to normal".

Our Conservative govts in Canada maintained this position through Diefenbaker (national medicare and the Canada Pension Plan), Mulroney who always believed in compensation for the workers displaced by changing conditions("bind not the mouths of the kine that tramp the grain").

The possibility of the end of Canadian Democracy was real, no doubt made more pressing by the failure of the govt of Newfoundland and its being"put into receivership" by the British crown.

Our current Conservative govt is not part of this long heritage, it dropped the progressive from its name, and true to ts backers (the oil industry in Calgary, Peter Pocklington, Conrad Black and the Aspers) it became an all out Maggie Thatcher party of wealth and privilege.

Its future---well--- with Conrad Black in Jail in Florida, Peter Pocklington facing bankruptcy and fraud charges in California and the Asper empire put into receivership by the Canadian banks this week, maybe its time for Stevie Harper to go looking for new friends!
