I agree. The onion is alive and freezing is apt to kill it.
Another item is that an onion is a bi-annual, in that is grows one year and then goes to seed the second year. Sometimes a cold snap or late freeze in the spring will cause the onions to bolt and go to seed.
I had better luck with onions when I planted onion seed. You can start the seed indoors in a pot and transplant later if you want too. Same thing works for leeks.
