In the control panel you have 2 image set frames on the right side of the screen. The first is the "mapdot" frame. Any image that you load/link there shows in your post on the left side of the screen (mapdots etc.). The second frame is the "personal photo" image area. You can load a picture there. Then if you go the your profile, there will be a link at the bottom right that says "This user has a photo available". You click that link to see the photo.

I have loaded a small thumbnail photo in my profile. Click my username at the top or the profile button at the bottom left to see my profile. From there select the user photo link to see the picture.

No you can not load a photo and a mapdot "in your post" at the same time. You can only have one or the other.
