What I find intriguing is the difference in oilseed radish in terms of planting date. When we plant them for seed production (usually end of march), the root growth isn't real dramatic in terms of girth. I do believe that they generally root deeper, though. Summer plantings (after small grain) usually yields a much bigger diameter root. This would be with an identical seeding rate in spring and summer. I've had some summer plantings that had roots that were maybe 2-4" across. The spring plantings look very similar to your pics, maybe twice the same diameter of a cornstalk? I know thats not real scientific for measuring root mass. Regardless of semantics, I think that any of the Radishes are pretty neat covers in the right situations. Again, we have to be very careful what varieties we plant here. Some will all but eliminate Sugar Beet cyst nematodes, some will encourage them to multiply. I know of at least one researcher looking at a variety of effects of planting various covers to control various problems. Its an exciting concept to me.
