I've able to kill out small thistle patches 2 years using 3% clearout 41 mix in a Backpack sprayer. that's 3.8 oz. to gallon of water. I spray them twice a year when they are in the bloom stage. I believe the key is to wait for bud to bloom stage. If it is a small area just reseed it after you've killed out the thistles.
