If you have the time I cannot think of a better thing to do than tackle that engine repair yourself, you have all the help you need on this site, especially if you purchase an I T manual to go with it. You can get a high quality overhaul kit from Reliance for $1000 or just a little less, and when I did my 4010 I had $1400 in machine work done to the block, crank and head. Those engines are really easy to work on and lot of individuals have been there before so there will be no surprises if you get stuck or have a question.

I do caution you if you do it your self, when you get the sleeves out take some pictures of the oring groves in the block for all of us to see, you may need to add an extra oring and some silicone around the bottom if the block is getting rotten down there but really easy to do.

A rough estement if you were to hire it done by an independent mechanic would be:
$1000 - for the kit
$1000 + - for machine work
$500 + - for the little things that add up
$500 - for the fuel system
$1000 +- for labor depending upon how much extra stuff you do.
