| The blades should be replaced when they get to ~ 17 or 17.25" diameter. By that point they have lost their bevel and don't cut well. If you continue to run them beyond that, definitely move the boot to the upper hole.
Changing the entire closing arm is one way of solving the 50-series closing wheel bearing problem. There are also a few kits with somewhat improved bearing shields, etc. Another possibility is to go to a spoked closing wheel with a durable bearing, such as our Thompson wheel:
