Marengo, Iowa | Last April 10th, I posted some pictures of a 170-acre field that had the corn stalks burned off when a wetland burn got out of control. I came up with a figure for the nutrients that were lost from a paper that was published by Dr. John E. Sawyer, associate professor, Dept of Agronomy, at Iowa State -- www.ipm.iastate.edu/ipm/icm/2000/4-10-2000/burnfield.html. To make a long story short, I had to turn the paper work over to a lawyer for a percentage to get a settlement.The person that set the fire had a commercial policy of some kind because he did some carpenter work, along with working a factory job.He would not talk to me and his insurance company wouldn't return my telephone calls. My insurance company said it was not their problem, since I had harvested the grain. They gave me an example that if I raised oats for the straw crop, combined the oats, and then the straw caught on fire and burned, I wouldn't have any coverage. Thanks to everyone who encouraged me to pursue the loss. | |
