Sunnyside, WA | Just had this same problem a couple weeks ago on a Volvo. Got stuck at the bottom of a hill in the middle of the road. Found out that the linkage was in need of tightening and had rotated over center and jammed itself against the firewall. Was able to grab it with a pair of pliers and free it. We got it back to the shop, tightened the slack out of it and no problems since. I hope it's that easy for you too.
