NW Washington | I don't think belt slipping will be a problem, and as Ed B. mentioned the belt is a good safety clutch. I used a Delta with a variable belt drive for about 20 years and don't ever remember a belt slipping even when going as slow as it would go. We also had an old antique Champion with about a 2" flat drive belt that you could bore a 2" hole in steel with and it would only old throw the belt if the bit got caught finishing the hole. Not sure what kind of magic box Ellis is using to get their speeds from a 2 hp AC motor, especially being able to reverse for tapping. I have seen 90VDC motors with a controller on a drill press which work good too.
