Subject: RE: Lamberton, MN -- Pea Ground demo today

Driftless SW Wisconsin
There was another demo in SE MN today (7/20). This area had an intense line of storms go through last night and left 1.5 in of much needed rain on the demo field which was recently harvested canning pea ground.

The customer hosting the field day has a 24 row strip till bar. He put together some very nice video of his spring stripping. He also had some very interesting cost comparison numbers he had put together. One of the most interesting is that in his system with a 24 row Bauer bar with a Gandy box and our Dawn Pluribus units, he did all tillage and fertilization up to the planter for about 0.25 gallons of diesel fuel per acre.

I brought a 6 R 30 bar. The plan was to run both in the pea ground in the morning, however the ground was so wet we started with the 6 row in a horse pasture sod (not killed) so visitors would at least have something to look at.

Our row units seemed to work well there even in this condition. What was interesting was how the pasture strips greyed off in the hour or so we were having strip till disussions in the pasture. With Trashwheels on the planter, they were near ready to plant by the time we moved from this pasture.

We later decide to try the 6 row in the pea ground to see how it handled the mud. After some adjustments, it left the strips as you see in the 2nd and 3rd pictures. I asked if there was any reason that there was no spreader on the pea combine. There was a pretty heavy ribbon of long viney pea residue down the center of the combine as you can see.

I'm not sure what sort of residue we will be going into at Lamberton or Waseca.

Congratulations and thanks to the host family, the Zumbrota Watershed folks, George Rehm and others attending - interesting day. Here are a couple photos.
