Subject: RE: Western Bean Cutworm

Alton, Ia
I agree in this area anyway (Southern Sioux county) that the problem was worse prior years. I spent couple hours yesterday in the fields, didn't find one egg mass or the residue on the leaf. Local Co Op hasn't sprayed or even heard of a problem. We are heavy with Herculex, but you still have refuge acres to worry about. Few years ago we had them bad, sprayed 3/4 of our fields, dind't find them in another, so didn't spray. Wow, yield was hurt bad. Difference was 25 bpa, but the lower field is always lower due to soils, so I won't attribute it all to the WBC.

We do have borderline Bean Leaf Beetle and low (~10) aphids in the beans. Sandy spots are dead. Quite the year.
