Subject: Re: Peugeot engine in spray coupe

near Orleans, France
as i find in my docs, Peugeot engine in the spra coupe is the XUD-11 AT. 2.1liter 12 valves turbo diesel 87 hp rated at 3600 rpm.
this engine was in the peugeot 405 car, with proper maintenance (change timing belt every 80000 km = 1000 or 1200 hour) it lasted 400000 or 500 000 km or more in the 405, longer than the life of the cars. was rated at 110 hp in the 405 car, my father had one it was a very higt performance engine, we made 216 km/h one time on the highway! 35 MPG at 70 MPH

spra coupe was looking for a ligth and good diesel engine for the 3000 series and choosed it for a few years (1994 ?-1998 ?),
but after a few years they mounted a perkins (4 liter, 110 hp) because the peugeot was a little too light in power (only 2.1 liter) and the 3000 spra's were heavier (4500 kg loaded) than the 220 (3200 kg loaded) on witch they mounted the volksvagen turbo diesel 76 hp(from the golf 1 td) for europe market. 76hp for 3200 kg was good, but 87 hp for 4500 kg was a just enough.
peugeot as alway being the first car diesel builder in Europe and theirs diesel engine are very good because of more than 50 years of building diesel for cars, due to the less taxes in road diesel fuel in France they alway had a lot of demand. they have just been catch up by the victory of Audi this year in Le Mans!
my dad has a 205 diesel with a 1.7 liter engine, it's also a very good engine, has 300 000 km and 5 liters of diesel for 100 km (50 MPG for a 20 years old car!)
our army car the Peugeot P4 has a peugeot 2.5l in , without turbo, 76 hp, a little slow, but last very long time .

if you are no-tilling and have flat ground, you don't need a lot of power on the coupe so you can go with the peugeot , but if you have hills and are a heavy tiller i would prefer a perkins
