SW Saskatchewan | Concaves suffered badly from harvesting swathed grain when the wide cylinder combines were in General use(MF 860, JD8820 etc). The narrow, dense swath of grain would wear down a section of concave and it would be impossible to maintain clearance across the width. Also, with picking swaths and harvesting low growing crops like pulses, small rocks would get carried into the cylinder and wear and break the wires.
In my opinion, except for cases mentioned, most of the wear occurs on the wires and allows holes or bent wires that effect the even flow of the crop across the concave and grain through the wires.
A rotary allows easy concave inspection, if you run a conventional, the concave wear can be checked when the feeder is removed.
The IH rotaries have heavy wear on the front rub-bars, and leading edge of the first concave. Keeping the rub bars adequate nearly always means catching these before they wear through. On a conventional , the rub bars are but one half of a pair of scissors!
