Central Kansas
Here in Kansas, smooth brome will grow on moderately acid soils, but does best on near neutral pH soils. Because smooth brome stands can remain productive for 20 years or longer, correcting soil pH prior to seeding is essential. Applying 30-40 lbs of nitrogen before seeding (mid September is best here) will also help ensure vigorous establishment. We plant 12-15 lbs Pure Live Seed...if a lousy seedbed...go to 20 lbs. Brome will not survive if there will be standing water for any period of time...or if drainage is poor and ground is 'swampy'. It is used for waterways here, so intermittent water and periodic flooding with quick draw down does not seem to harm the stand much. Much or my brome meadows are on terraced ground that contains a lot of clay....heavy for sure. Given moisture and nitrogen, it will do well but does tend to go dormant in this country during the hot summer months.
