Personally, I'm waiting for the XT thermal (measures temp. differences to 1/10 degree F)
I feel with the XT thermal it will give us a window into the future, rather than the present i.e. allowing us to be more proactive in stress prevention, especially under irrigation.
As plant stress manifests itself; 1) leaf stoma close, 2) transpiration decreases, 3) temperature rises.
Much of this happens outside the visual spectrum in the early stages. We see the results of stress-later - when it's too late.
What is the first thing the doctor does when you go to see him? He takes your temperature - right!
Personally, I associate NDVI with "what is" at any given instant in time.
I associate "THERMAL" with "here's what's happening now" - much of what you can't see visually.
There are some really smart people working in this field. If interested, I suggest you talk to them.
One of these people is Brian Sutton with AirScout. Another is Rick Perk with CALMIT UNL. There are many others.
I don't pretend to be an expert in this discipline - but I will be using the technology.
