Murmuring in the drone world is that 3D Robotics is falling on some hard times regarding the consumer drone market. DJI has too strong of a hold in that area and 3DR just can't compete. Personally, I like their products better and are much more open to upgrading components. However, I've heard 3DR's support is being shut-down to varying degrees and they may not have consumer drone support in the future. As much as I hate to say it, your better bet will be to go with DJI offerings since they'll likely be around for longer.

That being said, there are other avenues such as doing a custom built multicopter that is tailored to your specific needs. I have several I've built for different tasks. Getting one built custom might cost a little bit more, but you'll have exactly what you need instead of trying to make a Phantom work for your purposes.
