Subject: Irrigating soybean is more art than science

West Union, Illinois

Denny,

I have heard it said several times in several ways that irrigating soybeans is more art than science. Just about everyone I talk to around here that does it says they have yet to really figure it out.

The only purpose of irrigation until beans get to pod set is just keep the plant alive.  If anything watering is a problem because it causes excess vegetative growth. But once you start setting pods you want to keep the water to them. Every other day might be a bit much, but it depends on your soils.

But like a neighbor with a lot more experience said, I'm just not sure how to do it and get the most benefit from it.
