If you do some research and honestly weigh the pros and cons of both it is pretty easy to see that a fixed wing is more suited for mapping and a multi-copter is more suited for scouting/video/occasional stills.

At first got a multi-rotor thinking I would use it for scouting and mapping and of course the coolness factor of a multi-rotor had me thinking there was no way I would ever have a fixed wing. The more I researched and flew I began to realize while the multi-rotor is lots of fun to fly and make cool videos with if I want to get serious about mapping a fixed wing is the practical choice. So now I have both.

I built both myself using a Pixhawk flight controller in both and the fixed wing was just a bit cheaper than the quad...but not by much.
