Subject: Down corn

Callao, Missouri
We have a 40 acre field with a number of different varieties in it. A couple varieties are falling down. One variety seems to fall over sporadically, while the other seems to fall over in groups, which are 20-30ft in diameter. I cannot find evidence of stalk feeding on either variety. I can determine that stalk quality is horrible- I can squeeze the stalks together like they are mush. The stalks have typically fell over at the 3rd node.

Would there be any nutritional problem that could cause this?

Are the stalks mushy because that is the nature of the beast, or is this because damage done earlier turned the stalk to mush?

At what point do I need to consider a corn reel?

Corn was never extremely stressed, had quite a few small timely rains this year. No-tilled in mid-April, used Atrazine and Lariat as chem. Beans last year. Poncho on most, first noticed this problem about 3 weeks ago, but was not aware that it was so severe.

And I still don't think it's as good as it looks from the road.

Scott
