I can't speak for Ontario, since your dates of killing frost may vary. However, I will state what I think is current in PA.....
... years ago the dates of the last cutting of alfalfa were pretty "cut-and-dry" - don't cut between Sept 10th and Oct 10th. (Actually, I think it is do not cut for 6 weeks before killing frost.) However, in recent years, that line has become a bit fuzzy.
If you have good soil P & K levels,
If you have left the stand get some bloom at least once during the growing season,
If it has been at least 45 days since your last harvest,
Then it will probably be okay to go ahead and cut during this 6-week period.
This is true for established stands. For 1st year stands, I believe the "6-week rule" is still recommended.
As I said, this is the recommendations for PA.
