| There is a very interesting article in Nature Biotechnology 24(9):1075-1077, 2006 titled "Why spurning food biotech has become a liability". They lay out the case for making food retailers liable for damages cause by use of organic and non-GMO technology. They also lay out the strategy for farmers to shift their responsibility to the manufacturer unless they sell retail. The issues have been talked about privately, but this is the first public airing that I've seen. They posit that manufacturers will have to label organic and non-GMO foods with labels disclosing risk to mitigate liability.
