The spreaders used around here are like oversized fertilizer spreaders with ~34" apron chains and gates that open at least 13". We typically spread from 1-5 ton/ac which isn't possible with a box spreader. They'll also do a good job spreading damp lime.

I've got a Spreadmaster made by Sussex Machine Works in Laurel, DE. Less than a year after I bought mine they quit making them but told us they would maintain a parts inventory. I also looked a Baron Bros. Inc. and Chandler which were similarly priced. For the same money the Spreadmaster had a heavier driveline and heavier standard axles, wheels, and tires. Stoltzfus makes a good spreader at a premium price and now I see Lanco Spreaders in PA makes them also.

If I had it to do over again I'd buy an 18 or 20 ft model instead of the 16 ft model as it would be easier to load with an 8 ft bucket. With mine the center gets piled up before the ends are loaded.
