Driftless SW Wisconsin | From what I have seen, the "optimum" population is very dependent on your local conditions and how much are conditions likely to vary from year to year.For an area with good potential yields but variable moisture etc from year to year I think 28-30k but with a very good FLEX ear variety uniformly spaced with good seed/soil contact and consistent seed depth you can cover a broad range of possible weather conditions with very good yields. If you plant 34-38k or more in a tough year you may end up with lots of plants but relatively little corn... I think the trend for some customers is more precision and planning rather than brute force of 40k, massive tillage & fertilizer rates, etc. jmho. Good topic.Jim at Dawn
