We seed cavola and flax between the rows, but after 3 or 4 crops we usually seed across the stubble to keep our fields level. We don't find it rough, but we have been no-tilling for 25 years and the fields seem very mellow. I was examining the thatch layer on a couple fields recently and I could easily identify the residue from the past 3 crops. We have been very dry here since 1999.
