Subject: RE: Answers To the questions

Malheur County Oregon
Hank, The things on the front mount are diverters to push onions up out of the bottom of the row and also used when doing the two passes crossways to make enough room on the ends.

Danny, There are a few Shuknect machines in the Hermiston Oregon and Columbia Basin of Washington areas but none in our area.

Ben, Sand? whats sand. Just joking the soil here in the treasure valley ranges from what looks like white flour to gumbo that sets up like concrete. usually in the same field.
Nearly everything in the valley is furrow irrigated fields are just too cut up up and small to make sprinklers effective. Field sizes range from 5 to 40 acres. More onions are being grown under drip though but adds about 500 bucks to cost of production
Not any real white rot problems. However if it is found here the field is banned from production ever again
The onions are lifted with a rod lifter about 10 to 14 days ahead of harvest to dry down. Have to lift just under the bottom of the onion or you also get lots of clods.

The Owl. NO COMMENT!!! ha ha

One more thing. Just to freak out the no till guys. Our prep for onions is as follows. Harvest wheat. Shred stubble and water once. Two times with disc. Deep rip. Spread fertilizer. Moldboard Plow. Rollerharrow once. Fumigate with chisle plow for pink root and yellow nutsedge control. Rollerharrow 2nd time. Bed up or list up what ever term is used. Wait till spring. Then run smizer roller to break clods and crust. Two times with solid 3point harrow and basket roller THEN PLANT.
During the growing season we cultivate 4 times sidedressing 32% 3 of the times along with applying a strawmulch to help with water infitration in the bottom of the corrugate at layby.
4 to 5 herbicide sprayings and 7 to 8 fungicide and insecticide sprayings

Thanks all for the nice comments and leting me blather on here
