Have you taken a look at a browing A-Bolt rifle? Several years ago I bought a 25-06 A-Bolt new and it has been the best rifle I've owned. At 400' it would put make a group smaller than a quarter right out of the box shooting 120gr Balistic Silver Tips. I like 90gr Hollows for varmint and such. The 25-06 really is a good compromise gun I feel. You've got good velocity to keep from dropping much but are heavy enough wind doesn't play games.
